April 23, 2021

To make a one-stop location for all federal financial aid functions, the Department of Education announced it will retire the previous website used for creating an FSA ID.

The FSA ID is the username and password used by students and parents to log in to the website or mobile app to apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is also where students and parents can complete required loan counseling, file the renewal FAFSA every year and retrieve information about their federal financial aid, including student loans.

In the past, students and parents have gone to to create a username and password, but in 2019 most customers created and managed their FSA IDs using and the myStudentAid mobile app.

According to the Department of Education, the website will be retired on April 25, 2021, and legacy website links will be redirected to The automatic redirects will be in place for at least one year.
