Three questions removed from 2023-24 FAFSA

A hypothetical FAFSA admission ticket

September 1, 2022

It may not save a lot of time in completing the FAFSA, but it is one step closer to FAFSA simplification.

The Department of Education will be removing three questions from the 2023-24 FAFSA as a part of a phased approach to implementation of the FAFSA Simplification Act, which passed in December 2020.

FAFSA applicants will no longer be asked about the following:

  • Gender
  • Selective Service
  • Drug conviction

Although the Selective Service question has been removed from the FAFSA form, it remains a requirement for all males to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Because this question has been removed, male applicants can no longer register with the Selective Service via the FAFSA form.

The FAFSA Simplification Act represents a significant overhaul of federal student aid, including the FAFSA form, need analysis, and many federal aid policies and procedures.
